BISD ELECTION SEAT BY SEAT
The deadline to file for the BISD Board of Trustees is August 17th. With more than a month remaining, the slots are filling up rapidly, but we shouldn't forget that in the last two school district elections four and five candidates have oftentimes competed for each seat. Based on the entries thus far, we at The McHale Report are going to have some fun speculating because we have time to kill and mischief is our natural inclination.
Drue Brown and Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton still have two years left on their terms, but the other five seats are up for grabs.Incumbent Phil Cowen will not get a free ride. Some say that bad blood over past disagreements will entice "Coach" Joe Rodriguez into the Place III fray.
Marisa Leal, the wife of outspoken AOBE member Louie Leal, is gunning for board president and incumbent Minerva Peña in a Place VI catfight.
Erasmo Castro campaigns every morning and every night on his award-winning podcast Brownsville Talks and would ignite a huge interest if he decided to tangle with Daniella Lopez Valdez, the daughter of Cameron County Commissioner Joey Lopez, in the Place V contest.
Humbled but haughty Carlos Elizondo, voted out of office two years ago after a disastrous tenure that was nothing short of an embarrassment to his political, professional and personal lives, is certain that Eddie Garcia, formerly one of Brownsville's finest, is easy pickings in the Place VII showdown. Garcia was appointed to fill Castro's Place II seat when the latter resigned, but there are only two years left on that term and he aspires to a four-year post.
In Garcia's present seat, Castro's co-host on Brownsville Talks, Frankie Olivo, announced Sunday night on the program that he would be vying for the position. Caty Presas-Garcia, never one to shrink from a challenge, has indicated in her booming voice that Olivo would be no match for her.
At this juncture, that leaves retired BISD teacher Shelly Barba and West Brownsville Little League secretary, según el rrun rrun, Denise Garza without designated spots. According to the pundits, Garza has no imminent future as a board member, but Barba, a well-respected and charismatic educator during her many decades with the district, is a legitimate contender, but her critics contend that she is Peña' puppet and will withhold a decision on a particular place the dust settles.
It is very important to remember that the winner only needs a plurality and not a majority.
This is nothing more than pure speculation.
The wine has breathed enough.
The evening commences.
