BISD PREPARES FOR CONTROVERSIAL ELECTIONS

These are not good days for the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) Board of Trustees. In fact, the members are held in such low esteem by their critics that Joe Rodriguez and Carlos Elizondo are seriously contemplating returning to the board where they didn't distinguish themselves, the voters throwing them out of office in the last election.

But as bad as they were during their terms, the board's image is so bad that Rodriguez and Elizondo believe they can prevail as the lesser of two evils as in worse is better than worst. In the times of Trump, we have realized that anything is possible.

Five seats are up for grabs in November when a huge presidential turnout can skew numbers and surprises aren't so surprising because thousands have no idea for whom they are voting. In the old days when the BISD elections were held in May, maybe 5,000 came to the polls. With the presidential election an anticipated barnburner, the experts are predicting that as many as 35,000 will vote.

Minerva Peña, who makes City Commissioner Jessica Tetreau-Kalifa seem like a genius, and Philip Cowen, one of the stalwarts of Brownsville's most beloved gringo family, will seek reelection according to the Baker Boys.

Billy, the more talkative of the twins whose fame as private investigators is renown in South Texas, says that Eddie Garcia, appointed to fill Erasmo Castro's seat which will still have two years remaining on the unexpired term, will switch seats and run for a four-year seat, most likely in Dr. Sylvia Atkinson's spot.

The latter is currently suspended from board duties and faces multiple criminal counts, but her trial has been postponed due to Coronavirus. The pundits, however, agree that as a result of the accusations leveled against her that her political career is over.

Laura Perez-Reyes won the Democratic nomination for Cameron County District Clerk and is considered a prohibitive favorite against her Republican opponent in November. As a result, she is not seeking reelection to the BISD.

"In 2018 we had approximately 20 contenders," recalled Scott Steinbeck, The McHale Report's managing editor. "Candidates come out of the woodwork for the BISD. With five seats in play, I expect a deluge of aspirants. Besides the Rodriguez and Elizondo's rumors, there is talk that longtime BISD administrator Berta Peña will declare her intentions to enter the fray.

"The biggest rumor making the circles is that the charismatic but controversial Castro will withdraw from his race against State Rep Eddie Lucio III and announce an encore performance at the BISD.

"With the Brownsville Navigation District as well as Texas Southmost College tentatively scheduling their elections for November combined with the county, state and national elections, the BISD will turn a political junkie's appetite for voting into an electoral buffet."
