BISHOP PEDRO PHILE
Like many revolutions that took place in Latin American, the insurgents fought the Catholic Church for its abuses of the poor and its support of the rich. The counter-revolutions turned the tables as reactionaries made restoring the Catholic Church to its former stature part of its platform.
Brownsville bishops have never stood with el pueblo. They have never made public stands against the political corruption, the poverty and the mistreatment of immigrants. They will pay lip service to these challenges that The Brownsville Herald duly notes on its front page, but the institution has never waged an uncompromising struggle for social justice. Drinking good wine and sodomizing each other when the bottles run dry is the impression that most educated people have of the Catholic Church today.
Therefore, Bishop Pedro Phile's passionate defense of Eddie Lucio Jr. caught the public off guard. He never makes a public appearance. The effeminate prelate turns wine into Christ's blood in the morning during mass and then rides the buzz for the rest of the day until dinner when he washes down his sumptuous repast with a Riojo. Sometimes he'll knock off a second because it was a particularly bloody day for Jesus.
