CANDIDATES DARK PASTS

As we prepare for our BEST/AFT School Board Forums," said a spokesperson for Brownsville Educators Stand Together affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

"I wanted to provide you with the following updates: I have received and shared with our members the Felony records that I have received via public information on school board candidates. I am still pending on the results of our request for misdemeanor background records."

Of the five races, BEST/AFT only comments on two, the Place 5 race between businesswoman Daniella Lopez-Valdez and preacher Erasmo Castro. In the last South Texas Independent Journalists Association (STIJA) poll, Lopez-Valdez is leading Castro, who had to resign from the board as a result of a drinking incident, 56% to 44%.

"Mr. Erasmo Castro was found guilty of a felony for forgery," continued the spokesperson. "He received ten years probation and had to make restitution. After his conviction, Mr. Castro returned to court and received deferred adjudication. Since he successfully completed his probation, this cleared his record and allows him to be a candidate for the school board.

In the Place 7 showdown between retired policeman Eddie Garcia and terminated Brownsville Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo, who as an incumbent finished third in a three-person BISD race two years ago, BEST/AFT raises serious concerns about Elizondo. The same STIJA poll has Garcia winning, 57% to 43%.

"Mr. Carlos Elizondo has been indicted twice by a grand jury for the crime of theft of $8500 from the Fire Fighters Union" stated the spokesperson. "Mr. Elizondo's first indictment was withdrawn and then re-filed. The case appears to be pending."

Castro and Elizondo are part of a slate called "Los Buitres" that also includes political wannabe and failed political candidate in the past Viro Cardenas.

"Los Buitres are using the Coronavirus pandemic to pick the district's bones," said Maclovio O'Malley, La Voz de los Vatos. "They are running on a negative campaign that everything is bad, bad, bad in the district. In a time when we should be united in our battle against COVID-19 on behalf of our children, these three are pushing a platform that may be more destructive to the district than the pandemic. I'm thankful they shed some light on their dark pasts but chose to ignore Cardenas' two arrest, the most recent one a few weeks ago."
