LAZY BUT COOL SATURDAY
It is high noon on a Saturday afternoon. A chilling norther blew through Brownsville during Michael's game last night. You can't complain about football weather. You hope that the breeze hasn't transported yet more Coronavirus from the north where it is raging. That, of course, has stopped Trump from staging his rallies. Alexander Hamilton always feared that democracy would allow an ignorant electorate to select a president who could be the beginning of the end for our country.
I am not talking politics these days with anyone whom I suspect might be a Trump supporter these days. I suspect a Muslim terrorist and a Neo-Nazi might share a more civil discourse than Biden/Trump backers facing off these days. I can write politics because the vast majority of South Texans are Democrats and I hardly associate with anyone outside the family.
How did Michael do last night? Thank-you for asking. It was a controlled scrimmage. They open their official schedule next Friday. Under the restricted conditions, Michael's team won, 14-0. On the first touchdown after a series of ineffective drives that might have yielded one first down, Michael caught a quick slant and went 26 yards for the longest play of the game to that point. Three plays later, third-and-eight, he snagged a 13-yard curl for a first down at the twenty. They managed to punch in a score from there. The second TD came on a 75-yard pass when the opposite end found himself completely alone on a blown coverage and glided to an easy score.
Sadly, the team was lackluster about maintaining their social distancing and wearing their masks on the sidelines. Michael was among the worst offenders. With the SEC teams, the strongest conference in the nation postponing games because as many as 25 players are infected at one school, I know that we're playing with fire.
A Valley team cancelled its Friday game because a player tested positive. If there isn't stricter enforcement on Michael's teams, it will be a severely truncated season, which would be a shame. Michael is definitely one of their playmakers. In general they are mediocre team, but they do have weapons, the defense performed solidly and there is an esprit de corps among the athletes. There are no egomaniacs and each individual operates within his role. Rather than preoccupying themselves about personal feats and stats, they give the impression that they want to win as a group. It will take a united effort, but every outing will put them to the test.
I am going to call the head coach and advise him about the Trumpian behavior among his charges. I know that Michael will be profoundly disappointed if the season is cut short due to the virus and I may be even more disappointed than Michael. I will be disappointed for him, but I will endure a letdown because his Friday night game is the highlight of my week. COVID reduces your existence to simple pleasures. And after a temporary rush, we return to the dark reality of Trump and Coronavirus.
The countdown hasn't quite reach the last ten seconds when a mission control voice mechanically drones, "ten, nine, eight, etc." We are presently 17 days until blastoff. Will it be a trip to Mars with Biden or will it be another Challenger disaster with Trump at the controls out-of-control?
