REPUBLIC ENDORSES GARCIA

We sat down with our longtime ally, /DP-M, for a fictional cup of coffee at The Toddle Inn. The sheriff wasn't at his usual post, but his son Mark held court at the owner's table with such notable as County Commissioner Joey Lopez, City Commissioner Ben Neece, TSC Trustee Dr. Tony Zavaleta and Maclovio O'Malley, La Voz de los Vatos, savoring their huevos rancheros.

The publisher of The Brownsville Republic ordered una tortilla con picadillo while I ordered a pair of pork chops since I planned to hit the weights after my interview with the veteran journalist. Nobody has covered the Brownsville Independent School Board Board of Trustees races more thoroughly than /DP-M who digressed for a moment to note that there was no way in hell that the Miami Heat were going to upset the Los Angeles Lakers' despite the former's heroic performance the previous to narrow the series to 3-2:

What is your opinion of the Position 7 race?

"Unfortunately, school district candidate Edelmiro 'Eddie' Garcia never had an opponent, a viable one anyway. The 56-year-old retired city cop arrives at the door of the November 3rd election with a clean slate, police record included.

Do you think his foe's ignominious record has doomed him?

"His opponent for the Place 7 seat on the Brownsville Independent School District’s Board of Trustees is one Carlos Elizondo, he of the demotion as city fire chief…and a string of court appearances…and an alleged theft of fire union monies charge still up in the air."

What is your prediction?

"This one is over."

Really?

"In fact, it is almost boring, in that when compared to Mr. Elizondo, well, the mild-mannered Mr. Garcia seems to be his exact opposite. So much for the tell-tale worry voters have in seeing differences between candidates."

You don't give Elizondo a chance?

"This one is a no contest before the bell, as they say in Border Boxing."

Are you endorsing Garcia?

"The Republic is endorsing Mr. Garcia, only it’s not as if we love the guy. He’s no politician in the mold of Texas State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr, or even a name you could include in the same sentence with TSC Trustee Tony Zavaleta. Luckily, Mr. Garcia is the proverbial milquetoast personality, from what we’ve heard. He won’t shake the BISD branches just to let everyone know he’s there. He’ll likely never be arrested and charged with DWI."

What impresses you about Garcia?

"This candidate is pretty much what the BISD needs in this, its grand Opportune Moment of Change. With any luck, ever-worried teachers and parents of the district’s schoolchildren will see as many as four new Board members after the election. Mr. Garcia is coming off a two-year stint as replacement for Trustee Erasmo Castro, a joker re-tread candidate who resigned two years ago following a DWI arrest. From what we hear, the Replacement Guy did not embarrass himself."

And then there's that piece of shit Elizondo, one of Los Tres Buitres who along with Castro and Viro Cardenas plan to pick the school district's bones. He certainly hasn't distinguished himself serving the public, has he?

"Who knows about Carlos Elizondo? There was a time in not the too-distant past when he seemed to have it all, or so it seemed. Appointed chief of the Brownsville Fire Department, Mr. Elizondo went about his duties as if appointed to royalty, his penchant for wearing the fanciest uniform his sartorial badge from Day One as head honcho. There followed an array of problems that included allegations he steered business to a certain ambulance company, a career-sapping demotion to lieutenant, followed by charges that he had taken money from the BFD union’s kitty without authorization."

Amazing, isn't it?

"What he’s doing in schoolboard politics is the mystery."

Do you think any voters are taking him seriously? He's an arrogant asshole who thinks he owns the world. He struts around town as if he were still fire chief instead of a fire that needs to be put out.

"But, really, who cares about Carlos Elizondo? He has proven himself to be an odd fellow, someone seemingly forever in a serious mess of some kind or another – episodes that have no bearing on BISD’s future…and no value as something to be admired by young students."

Garcia is certainly a stark contrast to the contemptuous Elizondo, isn't he?

"True, Eddie Garcia has no great accomplishments as a public servant, but he also does not have a single political scar. We’ll give him the next four years to show his stuff."

/DP-M bought breakfast and left a generous tip. The waitress, however, was not his type.
