STIJA ENDORSES GARCIA

With retired policeman Eddie Garcia leading former Brownsville Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo--who was fired from his post and is presently fighting felony charges in court--by a margin of 57% to 43%, the South Texas Independent Journalists Association (STIJA) has decided to endorse Garcia for Position 7 on the BISD school board.

"Eddie represented the men in blue well and he has done an excellent job as Erasmo Castro's replacement after the latter resigned from the board in the wake of a drinking incident and many other complaints about his comportment as a public official," said STIJA's longtime and much-esteemed President Anthony Starr.

"Eddie, as the BPD's ex-spokesperson, conducts himself quietly and professionally," continued Starr. "But that doesn't mean he isn't afraid to make the tough decisions. He joined fellow trustee Laura Perez-Reyes in demanding the immediate firing of board attorney Baltazar Salazar, arguing that the embattled lawyer has taken the district and the taxpayers to the cleaners for $300,000 annually for once-a-month board appearances when he flies down from his home in Houston.

"It was a courageous act during a campaign season that will cost him votes as Salazar involves himself in board elections with significant contributions to his favorite candidates who in exchange, as El Rrun Rrun's Publisher Juan Montoya has more than suggested, reciprocate by renewing Salazar's lucrative legal contracts. It's nothing more than business as usual in Brownsville.

"Elizondo had the chance to challenge Salazar's shenanigans when the former was a BISD board member, but he was so up to his neck in his own shenanigans that he failed to keep Salazar accountable and transparent. For the record, Elizondo has never done a good job at keeping himself accountable and transparent, which is the obvious reason for his many encore appearances in court settings.

"We simply cannot afford to put our district's future in the hands of Elizondo. He has a proven record of failure. He is whispering sweet nothings to the educators and BISD employees as he ignominiously tries his best to curry favor from those he hopes have short memories, but nobody has forgotten that he did a better job serving himself than the individuals he coos he wants to serve now.

"What is the bottom line? It's simple and all reasonable and rational people know this fact: Garcia is one step forward; Elizondo is ten steps back."
