STIJA POLL
The November 3 election is 25 days away. The Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) Board of Trustees races are in the oven but they haven't been baked yet. Five seats are available. Only trustees Prisci Roca-Tipton and Drue Brown aren't running for two more years.
With the numbers beginning to crystallize, the South Texas Independent Journalist Association's poll, the most prestigious in South Texas, is releasing its next-to-last numbers.
"I always emphasize that the BISD is the only political entity that requires just a plurality to win," says STIJA President Anthony Starr. "Whoever accumulates the most votes is the winner. There are races from which are emerging clear favorites and there are races that will require the candidates to man the phones the final day of voting. These are the lastest stats:"
Position 2: Denise Garza, 41%; Frankie Olivo, 39%: Jaime Diez, 20%.
"Compared to the last survey, Garza has dropped a percentage point while Olivo has gain one as he has closed the gap. Diez is spending money, but he is never spotted on the campaign trail," said Starr.
Position 3: Phil Cowen, 48%; Jessica Gonzalez, 26%; Argelia Miller, 21%; Vero Cardenas, 5%.
"Cowen remains the prohibitive favorite," continued Starr. "The other three simply bring nothing to the table. Gonzalez can barely speak English, Miller enters election out of a formality and Cardenas is the embodiment of a loser."
Position 5: Daniella Lopez-Valdez, 58%; Erasmo Castro, 42%.
"Daniella represents the female youth movement who are sincerely committed to making a difference," explained Starr. "Erasmo is our own Donald Trump--bent on self-destruction. Trump was recently calling vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris a monster. Castro, not one to settle for second best in insulting his critics, slammed his foe as a dog. Based on the current numbers, Castro is barking up the wrong tree.
Position 6: Minerva Peña, 37%; Joe Rodriguez, 36%; Marisa Leal, 27%.
"Peña is not a popular figure, but, like Linda Salazar, she has a faithful following. Rodriguez is narrowing the difference, but he needs Leal to maintain if not improve her numbers slightly that would allow the legendary coach to eke out a victory."
Position 7: Eddie Garcia, 58%; Carlos Elizondo, 42%.
"This match has been publicized as the cop vs. the con," chuckled Starr. "Garcia appears to be gathering momentum while the arrogant Elizondo has turned off the public as one of Los Tres Buitres, which includes Castro and Cardenas.
"Our figures are based on a 35,000 turnout, but Pink Ape's Rodrigo Moreno is predicting that 45,000 will come to the polls as a result of the Trump-Biden showdown. In our final calculation we will have to take this turnout into consideration because there will be thousands voting who have no idea that the BISD is a political entity and even less knowledge of the candidates. With so many citizens just marking the ballots without any serious consideration of the candidates makes our job more challenging."
