TOURIST VIST BROWNSVILLE

Tourists come to Brownsville for its history. A couple endeavoring to recapture their romantic past take a room at the Cameron Hotel on the corner of Ninth and Washington. The accommodations are commodious.

They stroll hand-in-hand to The Library for drinks and The Kraken for pizza. Slightly buzzed, they return to their lodgings for sex and a restful night's sleep. Tomorrow will be a consummating experience.

During breakfast the next morning at Arandas they study their downtown map. The college campus and the old high school act as bookends.

There are a number of approaches to the historic district. The Immaculate Conception Cathedral at Twelfth and Jefferson, Sacred Heart Church at Sixth and Elizabeth and St. Thomas Church at Second and Jefferson offer the Catholic angle.

The lovebirds could choose any number of desultory courses of their own. Armed with Betty Bay's Historic Brownsville, they can cater to their whims, perhaps stopping for lunch at the Oyster Bar on Levee, later dining at Terra's Bar & Grill on Elizabeth before capping their day at El Hueso de Fraile down the block with the dependable Doc Scully Blues Band pounding out the hits.

No promenade is complete without a stop at the old cemetery. The names on the headstones resonate today: Edelstein, Yturria, Putegnat, Celaya. The dead have not died. Their spirit survives.

GROOVIN' ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON

In history there are events that change the sequence of time, the birth of Jesus Christ the most obvious example. But in communities, nations and the world there are occurrences that will serve as a reference point in the lives of individuals. There is the before and after of the earthquake. JASON MOODY SITS FOR INTERVIEW

Jason "The Jackal" Moody, the new public information officer for the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), is well-known in political circles. He has advised scores of candidates who, in the end, have usually lost to Rodrigo Moreno's Pink Ape aspirants.
